Trüberbrook

Trüberbrook’s story begins when a young American physics student named Hans Tannhauser wins a vacation in Trüberbrook, a small German provincial town of the 1960s. At first glance, the idyllic village with its mountains and the sparkling lake invite you to relax. But after a night robber’s visit, the calm atmosphere dissolves slightly. After all, why would anyone steal a document on quantum physics? This (and much more) is waiting to be discovered with the help of the inhabitants of Trüberbrook.

The best way to enjoy the story is to know as little as possible. Despite a rather short playing time of between four and five hours, Trüberbrook has a lot in store for the most curious players. This is not a normal village, an aspect that is clarified when we read the initial description of the game (it is a mysterious science fiction adventure, not the one that could be said at first sight). A Twin Peaks mixed with Oxenfree: that’s all we can tell you about history.

Since the beginning of the game the artistic style is impressive. The environments often resemble the background of a railway thanks to a look that is a mix of bright colors and realism. There is a huge attention to detail in these miniature sets, and the entire world of Trüberbrook has been painstakingly crafted by hand. The various scenes were digitized and reworked with the help of photogrammetry, which gave the game a strong visual identity and a distinctive style.

A total of 30 unique environments were created and thanks to the detailed environments GmbH was able to create a wonderful atmosphere. Even the bizarre inhabitants of this world will remain in your head once the game is over. Da Trude, the tenacious owner of the inn where we stay with the crazy conspiracy theorist Lessing – Trüberbrook rarely takes himself seriously and stands out a lot when it comes to his playful sense of humor.

To advance the exciting story and find out what’s going on, we spent most of our time in Trüberbrook solving puzzles. The general structure always gives us something to do, but often the solutions were practically in front of us. We also had to engage in conversations with the locals to discover new clues. However, there are rarely more than two steps that separate us from any solution. Adventure games like this are known for their complicated but often fun ideas when it comes to puzzles and problem-solving. The humorous elements of Trüberbrook and the cast of characters offered a lot of opportunities for fun and engaging content, so it’s a shame that these resources have been underutilized.

In addition to this, the game could have done some tweaking in certain areas. Item names are not displayed in the inventory, so sometimes it’s hard to see exactly what an item is once you’ve collected it due to their stylized representation. About halfway through the game, we were able to travel quickly to certain places, but we lacked proper names so we had to experiment to find out where we were going. At one point in the game they gave us the wrong answer options, so we had to guess randomly, although we were given the correct answer in advance, which also caused a lot of confusion.

With its duration of between four and five hours of play, Trüberbrook is a fairly short adventure game and can be played in just one session. The story does not seem truncated despite its relatively short length and is having fun thanks to some clever twists along the way. Even if the game focuses more on the narrative side, the difficulty is simple enough to make us lose the result obtained after solving a particularly complicated puzzle. The world made by hand is accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack and some great characters, however, even if this aspect does not succeed in raising what is otherwise a game focused on fiction.
