MSI GE73VR 7RE Raider: design
The aggressive look of the product brings out its real vocation and the intention to offer a reliable and performing solution to the players. The chassis is made of aluminum alloy, with a surface characterized by a brushed finish. From the point of view of the design stand out solutions like the backlight of the keyboard that, instead of being uniform, can show a different color for each button. Useful help during the gameplay phases, for example to visually communicate the number of ammunitions available, the health status of the character and much more. The overall dimensions are 419x285x28.5 mm, while the weight stands at 2.8 kg. Not exactly an ultrabook, but more than acceptable considering that it is a notebook aimed at gaming.
MSI GE73VR 7RE Raider: technical form
Brute force for the laptop hardware compartment. We start from the screen, a 17.3-inch display that can be equipped with a Full HD panel (1920 × 1080 pixels) with 120 Hz refresh rate and with response time of 3 ms or with Ultra HD resolution (3840 × 2160 pixels) IPS. It is also worth mentioning the possibility of extending the images shown to a total of three screens, connecting two external monitors thanks to the Matrix Display technology developed by the manufacturer.
The computing power is managed by an Intel Core i7 processor of seventh generation (up to i7-7700HQ) which is flanked by a maximum amount of RAM that reaches 32 GB (DDR4-2400) and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 video card with 3 or 6 GB of dedicated memory. The storage is instead entrusted to a hybrid solution, SSD (NVMe PCIe Gen3, up to 3,300 MB / s) and HDD SATA. Specifications that make MSI GE73VR 7RE Raider ready for virtual reality, therefore suitable for the execution of VR games that require the use of a viewer. The six-cell battery offers a capacity of 51 WHr.
A webcam that acquires images in 720p at 30 fps, WiFi 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, two 2 W speakers with a pair of 3 W woofers and Dynaudio technology for the audio sector, a jack for the microphone input and another for headphones output, three USB 3.0 ports and a second generation USB 3.1 Type-C (all highlighted by LEDs that allow you to find them quickly even in the dark), a card reader SD, HDMI video output and Mini DisplayPort slot. MSI GE73VR 7RE Raider: Review
Last March, the top-of-the-line version of MSI’s new gaming line, the GT73VR 7RE, was passed on the test benches of Webnews, a desktop replacement featuring excellent performance but also a prohibitive cost.
Luckily, even before the summer, MSI had presented this new GE63VR 7RE Raider, an almost identical version in the appearance but lightened of part of the technical specifications of the older brother and therefore much more accessible cost.
However, the technical profile has remained very interesting despite the reference band, in this case, is the average. On the other hand, in order to meet the demanding gaming needs, you need to be able to manage triple A video games. And the new Raider manages it without major problems, offering fluency and speed at 1080p @ 60 FPS and with the level of the details set to the maximum.
Merit goes to the well balanced and optimized mix of graphics card, processor (Kaby Lake) and display – all elements, moreover, that separately little already have different from those adopted by the top model. The only real sacrifice is, perhaps, represented by the hard disk, in this case SATA and not a faster PCI-Express. Nothing that passionate gamers can not digest anyway.
