Huawei MateBook X

Written by

The MateBook X is a high-end notebook with aluminum frame, Intel Core i5 / i7 processors, up to 8 GB of RAM, 256/512 GB SSD and USB Type-C ports.

Huawei has presented in Berlin three new members of the MateBook line that already includes a 2-in-1 hybrid with Intel Core m processor and detachable keyboard. The new entries are MateBook E (updated version of the original MateBook), MateBook D (traditional 15.6-inch notebook) and MateBook X, a high-end ultrabook that perfectly combines design, performance and autonomy. The latter is clearly the most interesting device, as it represents the Chinese manufacturer’s attempt to compete with Apple’s MacBook Air.

Design

The MateBook X has been designed to meet the needs of business users. One of the most important characteristics is therefore portability. The notebook is smaller than an A4 sheet, has a thickness of 12.5 mm and weighs only 1.05 kg. Huawei has also taken care of the aesthetics, choosing an aluminum unibody frame with curved lines and rounded corners using a diamond cut. The frames around the screen have a thickness of 4.4 mm, while the screen-to-body ratio is equal to 88%, the highest ever among the 13.3-inch notebooks. The MateBook X is available in three colors (Prestige Gold, Space Gray and Rose Gold) that uniformly cover the cover, keyboard and touchpad.

Data sheet

Despite its compact size, the notebook integrates high-end components that offer high performance. The 13.3-inch screen, protected by Gorilla Glass, has a resolution of 2160 × 1440 pixels with a 3: 2 aspect ratio, 100% sRGB color gamut, 300 nit brightness and 1000: 1 contrast ratio. Huawei has added the technology that filters blue light and reduces eye strain, especially during nighttime use.

The hardware package includes Intel Core i5-7200U and Core i7-7500U (Kaby Lake architecture) with integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 GPU. Considered the reduced thickness, Huawei eliminated the fan and added a cooling system that uses the Microencapsulated Phase Change Material, commonly used in the aerospace industry. Other specifications include 4/8 GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 256/512 GB SSDs. Connectivity is guaranteed by the dual band 802.11a / b / g / n / ac WiFi modules (2.4 and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 4.1. There are also 1 Megapixel front camera, two Type-C USB ports, 3.5mm audio jack, two microphones and two stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos sound system. The fingerprint reader has been placed under the power button, compatible with the Windows Hello functionality of the Microsoft operating system.

The full size keyboard of chiclet type is resistant to splashes of water. The brightness sensor automatically activates / deactivates the backlight. The battery has a capacity of 41.4 Wh (5.449 mAh at 7.6 Volt) which, thanks to the energy saving technology, offers a range of up to 10 hours of video playback at 1080p. The operating system is 64-bit Windows 10 Home. The MateBook Manager application allows you to synchronize the MateBook X with a Huawei smartphone and perform various actions, including file transfer and use of the smartphone as a hotspot for Internet access.
