Fitbit Charge 3, the smartband one step away from perfection

Written by

The new Fitbit smartband renews an already excellent and complete line, now with a further reason to buy it, the ability to measure the oxygenation of the blood

I took some time for the review fitbit charge 3: it is the latest proposal of the American brand and in my test has proved to be one of the best smartband ever among those tested recently.

It is immediately you who are tempted to throw it on the price: it is true, Fitbit Charge 3 is considerably more expensive than what some Chinese brands offer, but here we enter the theme of development, assistance, materials, application support, integrations with the third parties and we open an infinite speech.

Let’s say that if your inclination is to buy a 20 euro smartband, this is not the device for you.

If you want something more complete, with a high level of software care and you want more than one pedometer on your wrist, then this is an excellent option for you.

WHAT I LIKE

Larger screen
Greater autonomy
Captivating design
Swimproof
SpO2 sensor
In the “special edition” version NFC payments

WHAT I DO NOT LIKE

No GPS
Proprietary connector
Monochrome screen
A reason to buy it

It is difficult to indicate just one, but I would put the SpO2 sensor on all, which is able to measure the oxygen in the blood and for this it is able to identify the nocturnal apneas, which are a widespread disease, but difficult to detect.

The lack of GPS on board. To measure your tracks you need the mobile phone, a detail that for many may be inconvenient and can be attributed as the main fault of Fitbit Charge 3 .

Fitbit Charge 3 review, my test

I’m not an athlete, this is good to underline: I do not do regular training, so I could not check all the features available on Fitbit Charge 3 , in some cases I have to rely on the description of its options given by the manufacturer.

But I can say that the device is beautiful, especially because it is very light and compact: a leap forward in design and performance compared to the Fitbit Charge 2 model , which we talked about some time ago.

Even then I told you about a product among the best of the markets, now we have gone a step further and are close to perfection.

I say neighbors because some faults, however, there is but it is completely acceptable: the first “problem” I think will be resolved with software update, because Fitbit Charge 3 does not automatically pause in the race when you stop at the light, what the others do house products. It is easy to think that we will see this option implemented with an upcoming version of the software.

The measurement of the heartbeat, then, has a slight deviation (by default) compared to products that are considered points of reference on the market. In my case, in comparison with Polar H10 there are 4 or 5 beats of difference: compared to 155 beats on Polar during a race, I had 150 on the fitbit but all in all it is more than acceptable waste.

I have already written in the technical sheet which are the physical activities measured, from running to the treadmill, through the bike, weights, the new and interval exercises.

When you measure sports activity, you will be able to track the amount of calories burned, how long your activity has lasted, and then have all the most accurate information by synchronizing the application on your mobile phone.

The compatibility with swimming and the possibility of using it in water, with a resistance of up to 50 meters is perhaps the most significant leap forward, because you will have a complete and precise product at a lower price than the most prestigious Ionic and Versa models .

But the Fitbit Charge 3 has in its DNA the fact of not being just a smart tracker, but something more.

First of all it must be said that the display is touch, today it is 30% larger than the model 2 and that it is combined with a “virtual” button positioned on the side of the device that works simply by touching it.

Thanks to the combination of the touchscreen and the virtual button you can navigate the menu that offers different options.

I say “virtual button”, because there is no mechanical movement when pressing, but a solution that reacts to the user’s touch, returning a haptic feedback that simulates the movement of a button.

In addition, compatibility with third-party straps should also be added, which makes the proposal even more varied and colorful.

All materials used by Fitbit are top quality and completely hypoallergenic.

But what does Fitbit Charge 3 offer to those who use it every day?

There is a program dedicated to your relaxation, with an activity that can last 2 or 5 minutes during which you can manage breathing by following the instructions given on the screen.

With a “side-to-side” touch on the screen you can access the timer and alarms, but you can also view the weather forecast and then manage the settings of the Charge 3.

Important the theme of notifications , because thanks to an update of the last days it is now possible to use them in an interactive way, but only for Android users.

You can accept or reject calls on phones with Google software, as well as use quick responses to incoming messages.

It should also be remembered that in addition to the information that is shown directly on the display, there is an important amount of data that is instead detected and then synchronized with your phone, on the most diverse themes.

I start from sleep: this is one of the important aspects related to the wellness area, one of the directions embraced by Fitbit with the new Ionic and Versa products .

The Fitbit Charge 3 is capable of measuring SpO2, ie the degree of oxygenation of the blood. It is a parameter that can help to identify a pitfall for our health, nocturnal apnea, which are difficult to identify. This is one of the details that can make the difference.

At the moment there is not yet a certification for this option, we do not know yet when it will be available, but we must take into account the very relevant potential.

For women, however, there is a measurement of the cycle, with the ability to calculate periods of ovulations.

In everyday use the most significant difference comes from the larger display, which makes the information more readable and makes even more useful notifications coming from the smartphone.

Equally relevant is the battery life , which comes to 7 days and the promise made by the manufacturer has found evidence in my daily use.

Fitbit Charge 3 review: conclusions

The new Fibit Charge 3 is a complete product, performing, able to provide everything you expect when you want to track your physical activity, but thanks to the improvement of notifications today becomes an interesting alternative to the classic smartwatch.

In the Special Edition version it also works as a payment tool and this is the real icing on the cake.

I have no doubts, the Fitbit Charge 3 is promoted.
