AlpinerX: a connected watch 100% outdoor

Written by

Launched on Kickstarter at the Baselworld show (March 2018), the AlpinerX generated a lot of enthusiasm for this crowdfunding site. No less than 3,000 personalized watches were ordered, which raised more than 1.5 million Swiss francs from contributors wishing to purchase this connected outdoor watch . Available in four versions by the Swiss watch manufacturer Alpina, the AlpinerX is now available for sale.

Equipped with five sensors, the AlpinerX measures the UV index, temperature, pressure, altitude and direction. An alliance between the sporty design of a classic Alpina watch and the connected technologies, it offers a wide range of functions, visible in real time on the digital screen, divided into three categories: environment, organization, time and notifications.

The first includes tools related to nature such as an altimeter, a barometer, a compass, an indicator of the UV index (a first in watchmaking), a thermometer and a GPS connected to the application. The second category relates to the well-being of the user by measuring activity and sleep, thereby providing dynamic coaching based on these results and intelligent alarms. Finally, the time and notification segment guarantees countless time recording options, notifications, a universal time function and data backup on a cloud.

From black to orange, the AlpinerX has a diameter of 45 mm , its fiberglass case has an engraved steel bottom, and unveils a classic analog dial , circled by a 360 ° rotating compass bezel . Protected by a sapphire crystal, the matte dark background is associated with imposing luminescent white indexes. While indicating the hours and minutes, the hands, also luminescent, deviate if necessary, on the upper part of the dial, to make perfectly visible the information appearing on the digital screen when it is actuated. Waterproof up to 100 meters and resistant to shocks, this sports is finalized with a rubber strap (orange, black or blue depending on the version).

An analog and digital screen

On the dial, a digital screen displays all the functions available thanks to the multisensor technologies of this connected watch. A simple press on the crown gives access to a wide choice of functions, while the button at 4 o’clock displays the sub-menus. Depending on everyone’s preference, notifications may also appear on the digital screen. Missed calls, messages as well as services like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter are among the many elements that can be the subject of alerts, set through the dedicated application of the watch.

Connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth BLE, the AlpinerX is used with the AlpinerX Smart Outdoors application (available on IOS and Android) to record and display the data it collects. In addition, this application allows to directly configure the settings of the AlpinerX so that they are displayed on its digital screen. Please note that the data is also accessible from the SwissConnect Cloud Portal (swisscloudportal.com).

Designed and assembled in Geneva, Switzerland, the AlpinerX Outdoors Smartwatch is equipped with an embedded intelligence based on the Swiss MMT-283 quartz movement with a two-year autonomy. It is marketed at a price of 895 euros.
